30 Sex Myths: The Facts and Fiction
There are several sex myths revolving around in our mind but they are generally not true. Here are 30 such sex myths we have tried to answer for our readers.
1. Men want sex more than women do [WRONG]:

Fact is: The reason why men tend to wishfully prod their penises into our determinedly turned backs, isn’t just to do with desire.
2. If you’re a truly great lover, you should know how to please anyone [WRONG]:

Fact is: It’s extremely likely that someone who knows a lot about sex and has had lots of practice is going to be better in bed than an inexperienced virgin.
3. African/American men have bigger penises [TRUE]:

Fact is: African/American guys are bigger, and their penises are thicker, too. One study of Asian, Caucasian and African-American men came up with the following stats: Asian men were smallest, averaging 4-5.5 inches, Caucasians came next with 6 inches, and the penises of African-American men are reportedly 6.5-8 inches long.
4. Happy couples have good sex most of the time [TRUE]:

Fact is: If you are happy then sex may increase satisfaction in happiness.
5. If you have to plan sex, and it isn’t spontaneous, something’s wrong [WRONG]:

Fact is: Spontaneous sex is usually good sex. But planning a sex session — anticipating it, looking forward to it — this makes for pretty good sex as well.
6. Men are more promiscuous than women [PROBABLY TRUE]:

Fact is: When polled about their sex lives, men overestimate while women underestimate, due to societal pressures. It’s also totally dependent on how attractive the people in question are. An attractive, sexually liberated woman is likely to have had more partners than a not-so-fab-looking guy around the same age, for instance. It’s called opportunity.
7. If they had an affair, they don’t love me [WRONG]:

Fact is: If your partner cheats, it doesn’t necessarily mean he doesn’t love you. It does, however, mean he doesn’t respect you if you’d agreed to be monogamous.
8. Most women orgasm through intercourse [WRONG]:

Fact is: Only 30% of women orgasm from penetration alone. Most women need stimulation of the clitoris by a hand or a vibrator during intercourse in order to climax.
9. Men are always ready for and want sex [WRONG]:

Fact is: If you’re talking a 17-year-old who’s just landed his first girlfriend, you’re probably right. But once a man hits his mid-20s (and often before that), other parts of his life start to become equally as important as sex, and all that energy and focus is needed elsewhere.
10. Men reach their sexual peak at 18, and women reach theirs at 28 [TRUE]:

Fact is: With regard to their supply of sexual hormones, at least. Testosterone peaks at age 18 in men; women’s estrogen hits its high point in their mid-20s.
11. Semen is low-carb [WRONG]:

Fact is: Semen is mostly fruit sugar [fructose] and enzymes–not low-carb. Which finally explains why there’s no Oral Sex Diet.
12. Masturbation yields the strongest orgasm [TRUE]:

Fact is: But it’s not a hard-and-fast rule, as it were. “It depends on the individual,” says Jon L. Pryor, M.D., a professor of urologic surgery at the University of Minnesota. “For some it does, but for others, there’s nothing that beats good ol’ intercourse.”
13. The average erection measures 8 inches [WRONG]:

Fact is: Relax, Shorty. It’s closer to 6.
14. No penis is too large or too small for any vagina [TRUE]:

Fact is: But perception still wins the game in the end. “I was once at a dinner meeting with seven other sex doctors — six men and one woman,” says Dr. Pryor. “The men all agreed that size doesn’t matter. The woman looked at us and said, ‘Think what you want. Size matters.’ We all left dejected.”
15. Oysters make you horny [WRONG]:

Fact is: You make you horny. “There is no scientific evidence that oysters increase libido,” says Dr. Pryor. “But there may be a placebo effect, so if it works, great!”
16. Green M&Ms make you horny [WRONG]:

Fact is: Unless they do. Then it’s true. Isn’t the mind wonderful?
17. Cutting out broccoli will make your semen taste better [TRUE]:

Fact is: Semen is naturally bitter, and eating broccoli and drinking coffee can make it worse. A ray of hope for the Oral Sex Diet!
18. Having sex before an important event — the big game, the critical presentation — can ruin your performance in the event [FALSE]:

Fact is: Swiss researchers performed stress tests on people 2 and 10 hours after the subjects had had sex, and found that by 10 hours, the participants were fully recovered. There was only a small dip in performance 2 hours after sex.
19. Having sex in water (swimming pool, hot tub, shower) will kill sperm [TRUE]:

Fact is: Some of your swimmers may die, but it isn’t an effective method of birth control, according to Dr. Pryor. Though a hot tub can overheat your testicles and kill sperm, there should be plenty left for the egg hunt.
20. You can become addicted to Web porn [TRUE]:

Fact is: But the risk is low. Only 1 percent of all people who check out Internet porn will become addicted. If you’re sporting a ring, be careful: 38 percent of addicts are married.
21. Any boy Masturbates means no need to use protection because he masturbates and this means he won’t be able to get any girl pregnant [WRONG]:

Fact is: Seminal fluid (”cum”) contains sperm whether it’s released the first time or the fifth time in any given day, and it contains sperm whether it’s released by masturbation, nocturnal emission (”wet dream”) or sexual activity. Even after ejaculation (“cumming”), some live sperm remain in the penis. Condoms are absolutely essential both to help prevent pregnancy and to help prevent sexually transmitted infections.
22. There is a safer time to have sex with the period cycle [TRUE]:

Fact is: There are certain days of the monthly cycle when you are less likely (safe days) or more likely (fertile days) to get pregnant. What you heard about the timing is basically correct.
23. Body that is new to sex will reject sperm [WRONG]:

Fact is: Many young women can tell you that they got pregnant the first and only time they ever had sex. But it is totally wrong.
24. Sex Makes Men Sleepy [WRONG]:

Fact is: There’s a scientific reason men fall asleep after sex. It’s not their fault. According to experts, an orgasm literally changes a man’s body chemistry. Combine that with the physical exertion of sex and chances are that most dudes will go down like they were hit with a tranquilizer dart.
25. If a girl doesn’t bleed during sex, she is not a virgin [WRONG]:

Fact is: The hymen is a thin layer of skin that partially covers the vagina. Its purpose is to protect the vagina from bacteria and other harmful pathogens. This skin is very sensitive, and easily torn. Some girls are born without a hymen, and others have their hymens broken from sports, horseback riding, using tampons, or during manual sex. While the hymen is often broken during a girl’s first time having intercourse, there is a high possibility that the hymen will already be torn before that, or not fully torn after that. Every girl is different. So, the presence or absence of a hymen is no indication of virginity.
26. Drinking lots of Mountain Dew will decrease sperm count, and thus prevent pregnancy, thanks to the coloring agent Yellow No. 5 [WRONG]:

Fact is: Yellow No 5 is a safe chemical, used for adding a yellow color to Mountain Dew, as well as many other food products. The chemical has no effect on sperm count, thus rendering it ineffective as a contraceptive. Even if it did lower your sperm count, you would still have sperm, and it only takes one to get pregnant.
27. You can’t get pregnant from anal sex [PARTIALY TRUE]:

Fact is: Well, this one is partially true. You can’t get pregnant directly from anal sex, because the anus has no connection to the uterus or fallopian tubes. However, sperm can very easily dribble out and make their way to the vagina, so there is a very real risk of pregnancy. Your best bet is to use a condom anyway.
28. A girl who hasn’t started menstruating can’t get pregnant [WRONG]:

Fact is: Nobody can predict when they will get their first period. A non-menstruating girl could be ovulating the very moment you have sex with her, but you would never know it, and neither would she since she hasn’t had her first period yet.
29. You can’t get STDs or STIs from giving or receiving oral sex [WRONG]:

Fact is: This is one of the most dangerous myths in existence. Any exposure to genitalia or body fluids puts you at risk for catching an STD. There are many STDs that can be transmitted through oral sex, including genital herpes, genital warts (HPV), gonorrhea, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, chlamydia, canchoid, syphilis, internal parasite (amebiasis), and rarely, HIV.
30. Condoms are 100% safe [WRONG]:

Fact is: Condoms are a highly effective form of contraception, as well as a great way of preventing STIs. However, condoms can and do break, so it’s always good to use them in conjunction with another form of contraception such as the pill.
